The insurance firms make mobile payments to the farmers based on the models, automating and speeding the claims process.In India, 20,000 smallholder farmers use Nano Ganesh, a 2G-phone-operated unit that attaches to the pump of a drip irrigation system. An actuator operated by the phone turns the pump on and off. The farmer can see if the pump is getting electricity and if water is available.Disaster MonitoringFollowing the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System was created using kinetic sensors on the ocean floor. The sensors measure waves and water flow, and transmit warnings about potential tsunamis to disk buoys floating on the ocean surface. The buoys upload the information to government authorities via satellite.S imilarly, the Red Cross is experimenting with low-cost, solar-powered fire alarm systems in slums in Nairobi and Cape Town. The network sounds alarms and sends text messages to the residents and authorities, and uses GPS to locate the fire.EnergyM-Kopa in Kenya built its business around networked devices. The company installs solar home systems at a discount and charges households for the amount of electricity that they use. The system cuts off the power if the meter runs out, and users can buy more with mobile payments. The Ralph Coats Roe Medal, established in 1972, recognizes outstanding contributions toward a better public understanding and appreciation of the engineers worth to contemporary society. During his presentation, Hart-Davis discussed the work of seven great British engineers and inventors, among them Robert Stirling, the Scottish clergyman who patented a heat-powered engine in 1816 Thomas Newcomen, who built the worlds first useful steam engine in 1712 and James Watt, who 60 years later made improvements to the Newcomen steam engine that made it more efficient. Avoid Overgeneralizations Overgeneralizing often adds fuel to the fire. Statements like you always and you never are usually met with defensiveness and in most cases, they just arent tot ally true. Work to See Both Sides Often there is no right way or wrong way of doing things. The ability to see both sides of the situation can take the steam out of any argument. In the situation of college roommates, you have two people who may come from very different backgrounds who are trying to live in one very small room together. One student may prefer to study with the music on while the other requires an early bedtime and resents the fact that they do not have a quiet space in which to retire. This is a situation where conflict resolution can be helpful by having two people work to find a way that will meet both of their needs. For example, perhaps the student who is playing music can use headphones so they dont disturb the other roommate. Avoid Playing the Blame Game Resolving conflict is a great opportunity to help improve a situation and ultimately offers a way tocreate healthy relationships. When you are in the heat of the moment and experiencing conflict, dont express that nothing is your fault. By not taking responsibility for your part of the problem, you are not being resourceful in finding ways to improve the situation and mend the relationship. Avoid the Need to Be Right If you think you have to win every argument or discussion, you are losing the chance to develop a stronger and more honest relationship. Of course, no one likes the feeling that theyre accused of being wrong even if they are wrong. However, the need to be right all the time usually stems from a lack of self-confidence. If you find yourself in a discussion of Im right and youre wrong, try to see the humor in the situation which goes far to de-escalate any conflict.
